Hello, I’m James Gingell.  I like IT.

I’ve spent more than half my life working in technology, and I wouldn’t have it any other way. As the saying goes, “If you do a job you love, you’ll never work a day in your life.” I’ve been fortunate enough to live that truth.

Over the past 23 years in NHS IT, I’ve navigated organisational changes, restructures, TUPE transfers, and even redundancy. It hasn’t always been easy, but every one of the 11 roles I’ve held has taught me something valuable. I’ve had the privilege of learning from outstanding leaders and, in turn, leading talented and committed teams.

For me, IT has never been just about technology. It’s about how infrastructure, systems, and IT managed services enable meaningful change . Driving efficiency and adding value in environments where purpose matters and the stakes are high.

Ensuring the availability of critical IT systems for those who rely on them to care for others is more than a job; it’s a responsibility I take seriously, and a privilege I’m passionate about.

Today, I’m proud to serve as Chief Technology Officer at Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, representing Technology, Infrastructure, Cybersecurity, Information Governance, and IT Managed Services. Here, digital transformation has been nothing short of revolutionary, and it’s inspiring to see how technology continues to improve the lives of both patients and staff.

In 2024/2025, I experienced life on the other side when I became a patient in my own hospital. That perspective reinforced just how deeply digital underpins patient care. I share more about that experience here.
